DOWNEAST OUTING CLUB

Activity Schedule – July, August, September, 2008 Updated 8/14/08

Contact person must be called to confirm meeting place and time. If you cannot reach contact person, call [redacted]. Don't forget your lunch. In consideration of other hikers, please, no dogs on the trail. Unless otherwise specified, meet at 10AM for all hikes.

July 3 Orono to Old Town Riverwalk Flat walk along the Penobscot Shore. About 5 miles round trip. Meet at parking area behind Pat’s Pizza, off Oak Street, in Orono. Call Sue .

July 10 Black Mountain in Franklin Easy to moderate with beautiful views of Downeast area. Meet at intersection of Rtes 1 and 183 in Sullivan.

July 17 Mason Mountain in Orland Moderate climb over Mason Mtn and down to Craig Brook Pond and return through woods. About 3 miles. Changing room available at Craig Pond for those who would like to swim. Meet at former Duffy’s Restaurant on Rt. 1 in Orland. Lunch party afterward at the [redacted] home in Penobscot. July 24 Roque Bluffs State Park Flat walk through woods and along shore.Turn right off Rt. 1 in Jonesboro onto Roque Bluffs Road and follow signs to State Park, about 6 miles. Meet at parking area. Call [redacted].

July 31 Breakfast at Fraser Point followed by Schoodic Head and Alder Trail Hike Coffee and a charcoal fire await you. Bring your own favorite ingredients. Meet at Fraser Point at the entrance to the Schoodic section of ANP at 9AM. Call [redacted]. Climb to the Head via the Anvil and return via the Ranger and Alder trails OR for a flat walk, out and back on the Alder Trail. Meet at Fraser Point at 10AM Call [redacted].

Aug 7 Georges Highland Path in West Rockport Meet at Reny’s parking area in Belfast at 9:30AM. Carpool to West Rockport, where we’ll do all or part of a section of Georges Highland Path that includes Spruce Mtn. and Pleasant Mtn. Call [redacted].

Aug 14 Kenduskeag Stream in Bangor A pleasant walk along a pretty stream hidden in the center of Downtown Bangor. About 4 miles roundtrip. Meet at the waterfront parking area next to the Sea Dog. For those interested , we will also visit the Bangor Art Museum along the trail. There is no entrance fee.

Aug 21 Bucksport " Around Town " Hike Meet at the public parking lot on Main St. behind the Post Office. We will go through town and up to the Miles Lane hiking trail which will take us around the middle school and then back down through town to the River Walk along the Penobscot. Total of about 4-5 miles. Lunch will be on the Riverfront after the conclusion. The Observation Tower / Fort Knox can be done afterwards for those interested. Aug 28 Newman Hill in Orono Newman Hill is part of the Orono Land Trust. It is a new trail with good views of Pushaw Pond. The hike will be approximately 4 miles. Meet at the Shopping Center beside Burger King at the Stillwater Ave. exit in Orono. (Take exit 193 from I95, turn right on Stillwater Ave., go 0.2 miles and turn left at the light.) FRIDAY, SEPT 5 Jordan Cliffs, Penobscot Mountain Meet at lower boat launch parking lot near Jordan Pond House. Plenty of flat walks also in area, both carriage roads and trails. Possible popover indulgence afterwards. Call [redacted]

New Date Sept 11 Old Date Sept 25 Explore the Geology of Mt. Desert with Dr. Hal Borns Anna Buck has arranged for Dr. Borns, Professsor Emeritus of Glacial and Quaternary Geology at UMaine to help us appreciate the geological structure of some areas familiar to hikers including the Thunder Hole area and Day Mountain. Meet at Schooner Head parking area off Schooner Head Road or the Park Loop Road. Call [redacted]

Sept 18 Campbell Island off Deer Isle A rare opportunity to visit this privately owned island with pleasant trails on both Deer Isle and Campbell Island. Gordon and Jane will provide the boat ride although you may wish to use your own kayak or canoe. Meet at 9:30AM at the intersection of Rt. 15 and Sunshine Road in Deer Isle. [redacted].

New Date Sept 25 Old Date Sept 11 Great Pond Wildlands in Orland Gentle walk along Valley Road and then up the trail to Oak Hill Peak. A climb of 400 + feet to the top. Meet at the South Gate which is just across the road from Katchall Auctions at the intersection of Rts. 1 and 176. A walk along Valley Road to Hothole Brook as an alternative for those not wishing to do the climb. Call [redacted].

Annual Camping Trip will be August 17, 18, and 19 at Shin Pond near the north entrance to Baxter State Park. The fee for a campsite is $12 per person.
