Jan 19th 2012 In Castine


Another cross country or snowshoeing outing changed to a walk . . . still no snow anywhere.
Jessie R. lead this weeks hike to the shores of the Penobscot river and then everybody gathered at Jessie's house for some hot chili.

DOWNEAST OUTING CLUB Activity schedule – April, May, June 2012


Unless otherwise specified, we meet at 10 a.m. All activities are subject to last minute changes, so watch for email updates and be sure to call the contact person before heading out. If you cannot reach the contact person, call Gloria .  In consideration of other hikers, please, no dogs on the trail. Remember to bring your lunch.

April 5: A scenic walk on the winding road up Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park.

April 12: Georges Highland Path, in the Montville area.

April 19: Beech Mountain in Acadia National Park, starting from Echo Lake parking lot on a new trail.

April 26: Explore land trust trails in the hills and woods by Northern Pond in Monroe.

May 3: South Ridge Trail up Cadillac Mountain, followed by a tailgate dessert party.

May 10: Lampson Preserve in Penobscot, with gentle trails to Bagaduce River, then a walk at Tills Point Preserve on Maine Coast Heritage Trust trail, plus optional walk to end of Wardwell Point Road and additional trails.

May 17: New trail through Bangor, from Saxl Park to Essex Woods, about 3½ miles one way.

May 24: Horses, birds and trails in Newburgh.

May 31: Black Cap Mountain in Eddington.

June 4: Walk or bike on the Downeast Trail in Franklin, then hope to see horseshoe crabs mating on the shores of Taunton Bay. Lunch provided.

June 7: Quarterly meeting and potluck lunch at noon, St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Ellsworth.

June 14: Gorham Mountain in Acadia National Park. Up one side, down the other, then back along the Ocean Drive Path.

June 21: Mount Megunticook in Camden.

June 28: The Bold Coast in Cutler – or something in the western mountains of Maine.

December 8th Quarterly meeting & Luncheon

The annual DOC end of year meeting was held again at the Manor Inn in Castine. Gordon R. handed the club Presidency to Gloria H. and Mary Beth D. took over as VP. The other club officers remained in their current post.

Prior to the meeting everybody had a chance to view a slide show of pictures from many 2011 DOC hikes presented by Jane R. , do a bit of visiting, followed by a fine meal. Judy E. lead a hike around town after the meeting adjourned.








Nov. 17th Sargent Mt. (Giant Slide Trail)









This week’s hike was up Sargent Mt. (1373 ft.) in Acadia Nat’l Park. Gordon & Jane lead20+ DOC hikers up the Giant Slide Trail, which is considered to be moderate to difficult. Total hiking distance was 5 miles. A beautifl climb up the trail and spectacular views from the top of Sargent Mt.

Oct. 8th Sat DOC cider and donut making

This was the second year that Judy H. Invited the DOC to join her family making apple cider. Another DOC members David & Ann J. made fresh donuts to share.

Talk about two food groups that go together perfectly !

Oct. 10th 2nd Annual DOC Outing to Twin Pine Camps, Millinocket

Another spectacular outing for the DOC at Twin Pines Camps. Excellent accommodations, fine restaurant, and outstanding fall hiking in good weather . . . who could ask for more.

During the day the group split up, some went up Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park
others set off on logging roads and navigated through the woods to intersect with the Appalachian trail for a few miles. Everybody had a good time.

Sept 11th Pedal the Penobscot

Once again several DOC members participated in the 5th Annual Bangor Land Trust. Pedal the Penobscot

This was not a DOC event but you would never know it considering how many members helped with this fund raiser
